Our new volunteer hospice companions recently completed their preparatory course. In future, they will accompany the dying and their families in their final phase of life. In addition to expertise, a great deal of empathy is also required in order to offer the dying the best possible support.
Individual support for the dying on their final journey
Whether in hospitals, care facilities or at home, our hospice companions support the dying according to their personal wishes. They give time and attention and stand by the relatives. For this responsible task, the volunteers have completed a comprehensive preparatory course with 100 hours of instruction as well as a 40-hour internship in various care and palliative care facilities.
Joachim Schmid, Managing Director of ASB in Mannheim, and Christiane Pröllochs and Doris Detering, the two coordinators of the outpatient hospice service, are delighted about the increase in the number of hospice companions. "The topic of death and dying is still a taboo subject in society. That's why it's important for us to provide information about it and promote the hospice support services," says Joachim Schmid. Christiane Pröllochs adds: "Our hospice companions enable people to die with dignity in line with the hospice concept and provide valuable support at the end of life.
Our outpatient hospice service has been in existence since 1997. The full-time and volunteer staff accompany the dying and their relatives, and those affected receive help and information. Our outpatient hospice service works closely with the providers of specialized outpatient palliative care (SAPV) and is part of the regional network in the Rhine-Neckar region.
Our outpatient hospice service can be contacted by telephone on 0621 72707-320 or by e-mail at hospiz@asb-rhein-neckar.de.
The coordinators Christiane Pröllochs and Doris Detering will be happy to answer any questions and provide information.
