11 young people start their federal voluntary service at the ASB Mannheim/Rhine-Neckar Region
(Mannheim, 01.09.21) The excitement on the first day at the ASB rescue station in Mannheim-Käfertal is great for the new "Bufdis", what awaits them here in the coming year? Hendrik Maier, head of the rescue service, welcomes the 11 young people and gives them a first insight. First of all, they will be trained as paramedics. This lasts three months and is also a benefit for further life; as a paramedic you can always help yourself and others in need. It is also a good preparation for later professional life. The new "Bufdis" all have high school diplomas, and some want to study medicine later. "In the meantime, it's a classic path," says Hendrik Maier, "first the federal voluntary service and then studies in the medical field." A year of voluntary service with a rescue organization is a good way to start, also to find out whether this is really the right thing to do, Maier adds.
Young people from the whole region at the ASB in Mannheim
The 11 new recruits come from Mannheim, Heidelberg, Heddesheim and Weinheim, one young woman even from Freiburg. The proximity to Mannheim is also explained by the fact that the Franz-Anton-May-Schule of the ASB-Landesverband Baden-Württemberg is located here, where all rescue and emergency paramedics are trained. Far away from later career aspirations, the "Bufdis" also declare that they want to get involved for the common good. To give something back to society and help other people in need. "We are happy about all people who are involved in the social sector," says Joachim Schmid, managing director of ASB Mannheim/Rhine-Neckar Region. Whether it's federal voluntary service, a voluntary social year, an internship or an apprenticeship - the opportunities are many and varied at ASB. "Not only in the area of rescue services, but also in care, we have many interesting offers," adds Schmid. In addition to the four rescue stations in Mannheim-Käfertal, Mannheim-Sandhofen, Heidelberg-Rohrbach and Hirschberg, ASB Mannheim runs several senior homes in the Rhine-Neckar district, as well as outpatient care services and day care.
Focus on careful training and continuing education
The ASB Mannheim/Rhine-Neckar Region not only attaches importance to the best possible training, but also to demanding further training for all paramedics and emergency paramedics. Every two weeks, missions of various scenarios are rehearsed in the courtyard and teaching rooms of the rescue station in Mannheim-Käfertal. Training to become a paramedic usually takes three months, while training to become an emergency paramedic takes three years. Currently, 59 young people are being trained as emergency paramedics. At ASB Mannheim/Rhine-Neckar Region , around 300 employees work as paramedics or emergency paramedics. A total of 8 ambulances and 12 patient transport vehicles are stationed at the four rescue stations. fek
