10 young people start their training as emergency paramedics at ASB Mannheim/Rhine-Neckar Region .

(Mannheim, 07.04.2022) "You have chosen a great and exciting professional environment," says Joachim Schmid, Managing Director of ASB Mannheim/Rhine-Neckar Region , welcoming the new trainees to the rescue station in Mannheim-Käfertal. It is also a profession with a future, he adds, because emergency paramedics will always be needed and sought after in the long term. The job description in the rescue service is not really new to the trainees, all 10 trainees have already completed their federal voluntary service with ASB Mannheim/Rhine-Neckar Region . "As Bufdis we completed also the three-month training as a paramedic", a trainee tells, "there we were assigned however mainly in the patient transport". Now, she adds, it's exciting and a challenge to really get started in the rescue service. In the next three years, the trainees will be assigned to the four rescue stations of the ASB Mannheim/Rhein-Neckar region. The theoretical training will take place at the Franz Anton Mai School in Mannheim, the state school of the ASB Baden-Württemberg e.V. In addition, there will be a stay in hospitals as a third pillar; "here, the trainees go through several stations," says Julian Baisch, deputy head of the training rescue station at the ASB Mannheim, "starting with the emergency room and ending with the intensive care unit and the operating theater." This means that the training is broadly based and offers many career opportunities later on, as well as opportunities for further training or study. In cooperation with the SRH Fernhochschule Heidelberg, ASB Mannheim offers, for example, a scholarship program with courses in social management, health management, and business and management.

The 10 new recruits come not only from Mannheim, but from all over the surrounding area. Far removed from future career aspirations, the trainees also declare that they want to get involved in the common good. To give something back to society and help others in need. "We are happy about all people who get involved in the social sector," says Joachim Schmid. Whether it's federal voluntary service, a voluntary social year, an internship or an apprenticeship - the opportunities are many and varied at ASB. It is also interesting that more and more young women are getting involved in the rescue service. "This has not been a man's job for a long time, on the contrary," says Julian Baisch. Among the new trainees, the gender distribution is evenly split, five young women and five young men. The trend is that in the future there will even be more women than men working in rescue services, adds Baisch. "Not only in the area of rescue services, but also in nursing, we have many interesting offers," adds Schmid. In addition to the four rescue stations in Mannheim-Käfertal, Mannheim-Sandhofen, Heidelberg-Rohrbach and Hirschberg, ASB Mannheim runs several senior homes in the Rhine-Neckar district as well as outpatient care services and day care centers.

Focus on careful training and continuing education

The ASB Mannheim/Rhine-Neckar Region not only attaches importance to the best possible training, but also to demanding further training for all paramedics and emergency paramedics. Every week, missions of various scenarios are rehearsed in the courtyard and in the teaching rooms of the rescue stations in Mannheim. Training to become a paramedic usually takes three months, while training to become an emergency paramedic takes three years. Currently, 55 young people are being trained as emergency paramedics. At ASB Mannheim/Rhine-Neckar Region , around 300 employees work as paramedics or emergency paramedics.
