Our new ECMO mobile

Our new ECMO mobile: Emergency medical care par excellence

A first glimpse of our new ECMO mobile was already available at this year's Mannheim May Market. At the University Medical Center Mannheim (UMM) stand, UMM experts provided insights into mobile care with the complex ECMO lung replacement procedure. Interested visitors were also able to learn about the special features of the new emergency ambulance first-hand from our ambulance service provider, Herwig Grob.

The ECMO-Mobile is a joint project of the Center for Cardiovascular Acute Medicine Mannheim, the Clinic for Anesthesiology, Operative Intensive Care Medicine and Pain Medicine of the University Hospital Mannheim, the I. Medical Clinic of the UMM and the ASB Mannheim/Rhine-Neckar.

In addition to the equipment of a normal emergency ambulance (NEF), such as the emergency backpacks for respiration and circulation, the additional emergency ambulance backpack and an ECG with invasive blood pressure measurement, the ECMO mobile is equipped with a holder for Cardio-Help, i.e. for the ECMO device, which is maintained and stored in the hospital's emergency department. With the help of this artificial, external lung, the patient's blood can be enriched with oxygen outside the body. In technical terms, this is also known as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

The ECMO mobile is stationed at our rescue station in Mannheim-Käfertal and is ready for use around the clock. Thanks to the new vehicle, it is possible to bring the UMM's experts, including the modern equipment, to their place of deployment within a very short time.
